The list goes on, and the possibilities are endless. For example, at the University of
Michigan, clubs range from Fantasy Football for Charity to Fun Friends of the Food
Cart, a group of students who aim to explore food cart dining in the area—and that’s
just in the F part of the alphabetical list.
A final point to ponder as you explore everything your school has to offer: Use
your critical thinking skills to find the balance between work and play that suits you.
Some freshmen become so overloaded with activities that it takes a toll on their aca-
demic performance. Others avoid activities and feel disconnected from people and
from the broader college experience. Pace yourself the first year, trying a couple of
activities that interest you and monitoring how well you are managing your time. Eval-
uate periodically and reduce your involvement if you find your studies are suffering.
The right balance will enrich your life without overloading it.
