There is so much talk about ageing society and
ageism. The mood is often foreboding when
discussing this, especially about how the young will
carry the ‘burden’. However, true harmony comes
from respect and support that is mutual. This starts
with the youths being provided with a more accurate
– non-simplistic, stereotypical – understanding of
ageing. The key is to appreciate older people’s unique
qualities and abilities and how they can complement
what the young can do.
“One of the most enduring memories of my NYAA
journey was the joy on the faces of the elderly
residents during my weekly visits to an old folk
home at Upper Thomson Road. These experiences
formed the foundation upon which I draw to be
a leader with a purpose, to serve above self. I am
grateful to be part of the NYAA for what has been
accomplished in the past 30 years, and I look
forward to even greater achievements in the future.”
