When I was a toddler, my first hawker centre visit
was one near my house. It was located near Upper
Serangoon View. I still recall that the first food I had
there was western food. I particularly enjoyed their
cheese fries, and they were delicious. I was too young to
have a preference for any particular drink I liked at that
point in time.
As I grew up, my family and I visited many hawker
centres all around Singapore. My personal favourite is
Bedok Hawker Centre. I have visited this hawker centre
many times over the past few years. I especially love the
laksa and roti prata there. It is simply delicious! We love
to watch the uncle flip the prata with style whenever we
place our order.
Unfortunately, he is going to retire soon. I found this out
as I have conversations with him each time we meet. He
told me that he has been doing this job for over 40 years
and that it is time for him to retire. He wants to spend “Watching uncle flip the prata with flair and
some time with his grandchildren and maybe even travel hearing his stories made me realise hawker
a bit. He plans to hand over the shop and the business centres aren’t just about food — they’re
to his next generation and let his legacy continue. He about legacies, love, and memories.”
also assured us that his sons are as good as he is, and
the taste of the prata will not be compromised. I told
him that I would miss him and that I hoped to see him
around. He is fond of me and appreciates that we buy Dania Alyka Binte Huzir Lim-Tandoc
him drinks each time we order prata from him. I would P5.6
usually order a milo dinosaur for myself and an iced milo North Spring Primary School
for him. I love to eat the powder first before I drink the
rich drink.
I hope to continue to explore more hawker centres
around Singapore and get to taste yummy roti prata and
milo dinosaurs!
