I was rummaging through the things in my cupboard
when suddenly something fell out. It was a photo frame
with a photo. As I picked up the photo frame, I saw a
picture of a hawker and me. We both had a grin on our
faces. Looking at it just brought back memories of when
I interviewed a hawker. This is how it all began.

I had gone to Rivervale Mall with a paper and a pen to
interview a hawker. As I entered Food Junction, a hawker
centre, a gush of aroma made my stomach growl. I
headed towards ‘Mixed Rice’. Mixed rice is my favourite
dish at the Food Junction. They sell chickens, eggs, fish,
salad, rice, and other varieties of food. I think the name
mixed rice comes from the fact that the rice is mixed
            with different foods.

I approached the uncle who works in the stall which sells
mixed rice. I asked him for some rice, chicken, eggs, and my attention. She asked me if I was done finding what
curry. The curry was like a cherry on top. I needed. I replied with a smile on my face,” Almost.” I
continued searching and knew that this memory of mine
Firstly, I asked the uncle,” Uncle, how long have you been would be etched in my mind forever.
selling here at Sengkang? “The uncle replied that he has
been selling food there for five years.

He said, “It’s been a long time, and I’ve seen Sengkang
change a lot.” Secondly, I asked him what he enjoyed the “Through my interview with the uncle selling
most about being a hawker. Again, the uncle replied that mixed rice, I learnt that hawker life isn’t easy
he enjoys connecting with customers and making money. — but it’s full of heart, history, and dedication
Last, I asked him about being a hawker. His answer had to to every delicious plate.”
be the best I have heard. The uncle replied that the most
significant challenges he faced were balancing hours,
dealing with demanding customers, and managing costs. Gupta Arohi

Suddenly, a familiar voice hauled me out of my North Spring Primary School
