Environmental Review
The ESI team noted that despite recycling bins conveniently located throughout the SDC premises, the amount of recycled
material collected eventually remains low. Additionally, there are instances of recyclable materials being improperly
disposed of in general waste bins. The ESI team's objective was to investigate methods to increase the amount of general
and recyclable waste collected from relevant bins by 10% annually while encouraging visitors to dispose of waste correctly.
The ESI team conducted a waste review over four months (February 2023 to May 2023). Various waste and recyclable
items were collected and weighed (Figure 3). These items included paper, metal, plastic, glass, and others. A detailed table
displaying the quantities of various waste items in kilograms is compiled, as shown in Table 1.
Table 1: Quantities of Waste Items at SDC
Aluminium, plastic and paper data from Table 1 were used to compute the equivalent associated annual carbon emission
CO2. Table 2 shows the estimated total yearly associated carbon emissions of CO2 from the waste generated is 15,942 kg.
Annual Resource Units Conversion Ratio Annual Carbon Emission CO2 Conversion Ratio
Consumption (kg) with Units
Aluminium 525 kg 16.00 8,400 16kg CO2/kg
Plastic 720 kg 6.00 4,320 6kg CO2/kg
Paper 3,428 kg 0.94 3,222 0.942kg CO2/kg
Total CO2 15,942
