Students’ Reflection

Through this project, I have gained a deeper understanding of the significance of sustainability
in Singapore and how certain organisations are integrating it into their operations. I am also
enlightened by the diverse perspectives on recycling held by various individuals and how
we can enhance engagement among Singaporeans to improve recycling habits through the
implementation of better recycling bin designs and concepts. Additionally, I have acquired valuable
insights into waste auditing and the wide range of recyclable items that exist.

I have come to realise the importance of sustainability and its potential impact on our lives and
the planet if we continue to overlook it. Now, I feel equipped to apply what I’ve learned to my daily
activities.

During the SDC project, I learned about what items are recyclable and gained an understanding of
how even small actions can have a significant impact on our environment. Embracing the principles
of the 3 Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle – is crucial in minimising our environmental footprint. I also
became aware of the approximate quantities of recyclable materials such as bottles, glass, and paper
compared to general waste like food waste and non-recyclable items. Finally, I learned how to design
and strategically place bins in SDC to optimise their usage.

Through my participation in discussions and research within this project, I have come to understand
that sustainability projects play a crucial role in tackling environmental and economic challenges, all
while fostering long-term viability. Engaging in such initiatives not only helps pave the way for a more
sustainable future, but also provides valuable experiences and opportunities for personal growth.
Throughout my involvement in the sustainability project, I have had the chance to develop skills in
problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, data analysis, and environmental awareness.
