Student's Reflection
We did a project regarding sustainability this project state the importance of waste reduction through
innovative on reusing. by reusing the charcoal ash that have been produced as waste during the
cooking process of the bak kwa. instead of just throwing it away we have decided to put the charcoal
ash into good use by creating a charcoal ash soap bar to help with removing the stains of pots and
pans. it is environmentally friendly as it produces natural alternative cleaner. this project taught me the
importance of innovative thinking when it comes to sustainability, by making use of unwanted waste
and transformed into chemical-based products.

This project was a roller costar ride from my point of view due to the challenges we faced. At first,
we wanted to recycle energy from the process to cook the Bak Kwa for other uses, but the owner
rejected the idea. Then we asked the owner, what we could do to improve but, he replied that we
could not mess with the process of cooking the Bak Kwa. This was when we struggled to find any other
sustainable solutions. After lots of thought, we realized that the company uses a lot of money on the
charcoal used to cook the Bak Kwa. With that in mind, we decided to reuse the burnt charcoal and
infusing it with soap bases to create a soap bar. The charcoal’s natural cleaning properties helps to
clean off the stains on pots and pans. This solution was the only one we could think off after facing the
Justin Choo setbacks. It is simple, eco-friendly and it is beneficial to the company to use charcoal as another use.

Engineering teamwork and the importance of sustainability. Without sustainability, we would have gone through
ITE College East longer periods of global warming that could result in damaging our environment and our health.
