The City that Never Sleeps

Naseem Williams, The Facing History School

As I walked outside to go to the grocery store
The city underneath me that claimed to be the city
                 that never sleeps was dead
New York claimed to be the Big Apple but at the
                 moment the apple was eaten
It feels as if the depression that was in the residents
                 reflected onto the city
Remote learning not the same as sitting in your
teacher’s face enjoying them teaching you face to face
making sure you understand what you’re learning
Missing seeing all of your friends in the hallway
                 fooling around and fighting
Reminiscing about the long train rides and thinking
                 about life on them
There’s a virus and we call her “Rona” and she will not
                 stop spreading
Our city leaders canceling school and forcing us to be
                 trapped home with our thoughts
The day I was born is coming up and I can’t even
                 celebrate, when will this end?
