Reflection
Reflection on
Indra Jatra
Do you know that we celebrated Indra Jatra in
grade 4 at school? Grade 4A and 4B both had prepared
it well with interest. Some days before the celebration,
we had painted the chariots in the art class. The day
before the celebration, we went to the shed to cook
‘Barah’ and we picked ‘Saag’ for the bhoj. Some par-
ent volunteers had come to help us cook and the oth-
er day early in the morning we had wore our Newari
dresses. It was called a Hakupatashi. Girls wore red
lipstick, eyeliner and red tika while boys were wearing
mustaches. There were a lot of characters, there was
a Kumari, Ganesh, Bhairav, 2 Lakheys, 2 Pujarees, 6
Musicians, 6 Pulukishis, 2 MCs and the rest of us be-
came people in the procession. I was one of those peo-
ple.The celebration was about to begin. We were in the
shed peeling potatoes, eggs and making a Samay Baji
while the parents and other students were coming. Af-
ter all the parents got seated we started the program.
First the MC started the celebration by telling what
was happening.
Then came the Pulukishi dance. There were 4 rounds
done by him.
The torchbearer leaded the Pulukishi, Then
came the Lakheys. Then came lord Ganesh in his rath
who had 2 rounds, Then came lord Bhairav in his rath
with 2 rounds too. Then came Kumari in a rath also
with 2 rounds. The Pujarees did Puja to everyone.
After all the fun it was time to eat. Parents ate
the Samay Baji as prasad and we had a proper newari
bhoj consisting of barah, baji, chicken, aalu, bhatmas,
aila(Sprite), curd etc.
Sadly the celebration had ended. We went
back to the classroom and discussed it and it was time
to go back home.
I enjoyed the celebration a lot. I hope the par-
ents and the students
enjoyed it too.
