CLEAN, CHECK, MAINTAIN AND STORE TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Your tools and equipment are not only expensive, but they are vital to your work. You
must ensure that all tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored in
line with th e manufacturer’s instructions and site or company procedures. This will not
only keep your valuable items secure and in good condition but will make sure that they
are safe for your use next time.
All tools and equipment should be cleaned after use to re move all dirt, mud moisture or
other contaminants that can damage it.
To maintain your safety and the safety of those using the tools next, you must check tools
and equipment for damage or other faults. If anything is wrong, you need to report it and
carry out any repairs if you can.
The user itself will be responsible to dispose of or recycle materials into the correct
bins at the end of each shift.
Remember that some tools and equipment require regular maintenance. This might
include:
Oiling timber surfaces
Greasing metal surfaces
Lubricating moving parts
Most tools and equipment will have specific storage instructions that will be outlined by
the manufacturer or by the owner of the tools. These instructions might include storing in
a specially made case before it is placed in the tool box or coiling the cords. These
instructions are in place to make sure they will not be damaged, and they can be easily
found next time somebody needs to use them.
REPORTING ALL FAULTS
During a cleanup you must ensure that any damaged or faulty tools, equipment or
materials are tagged, removed from use (isolated) and/ or reported to your manager or
supervisor to stop anyone else using them.
Any problems found need to be written down in a logbook, checklist or other forms.
You also need to seek assistance from your supervisor or another authorized person if
you are unsure of the problem or if something doesn’t seem right about the item.
