ENSURE SAFETY SYSTEM HAS BEEN INSTALLED CORRECTLY
Safety systems and equipment are used to access work areas safely, to stop workers, tools
or materials from falling, or for safely arresting the descent of workers. These will need to
be inspected to ensure that they are correctly installed. This will form part of the regular set
up procedures and ongoing inspection routines.
Safety systems and work at heights equipment that you must check to ensure that it is
installed correctly includes:
Fall prevention devices:
o Temporary work platf orms
o Guard rails
o Safety mesh
Work positioning systems:
o Industrial rope access systems
o Restraint systems
Fall-arrest systems:
o Catch platforms
o Safety nets
o Individual fall -arrest systems
o Anchorage lines and rails
Ladders:
o Portable and fixed ladders
o Platform ladder- Best suits when a fall arrest system is unsuitable while
safely working at low heights.
Checklists based on the requirements in the relevant standards provide a basis for
ensuring safety systems have been installed correctly. In addition to this, manufacturer’s
instructions also provide information to ensure safety systems are correctly installed.
Audit and on-site inspections carried out by third party safety specialists can ensure
safety systems are installed correctly.
There is information, training and instruction should also be provided to workers for safety.
This may include
Use of MHS
Placing tools on a or in a toolbox inside a work platform
