RIIWHS204E-Work safely at heights
All Fall protection equipment and safety system must be installed and regularly checked by
a competent person. In some cases, the equipment will need to be installed and
checked by a qualified person that holds a scaffolding or rigging license. Procedures must
be in place for inspecting and maintaining scaffold to ensure it remains in a safe condition.
The ABCD of Fall Protection includes:
Anchorage – Anchorage provides a secure point of attachment to an existing
structure for the fall arrest system. Anchorage devices can be permanent or
temporary and vary to suit the type of structure available.
Body Support – Full body harness connect the worker to the fall arrest system. They
are designed to protect the worker against serious injury in the event of a fall.
Connectors – Connectors are devices that connect the full body harness to the
anchorage system. They can be single products or multiple devices working together.
Descent and Rescue – Descent and rescue systems enable the retrieval of an injured
or incapacitated worker. In the event of a rescue, this equipment facilitates rapid
recovery of the worker.
CORRECT FITTING AND ADJUSTMENT
The correct fitting and adjustment of the safety equipment distributes forces of a fall
and lowers the risk of injury. Many worksites have a poster visible to indicate a step -by-
step process of fitting a harness to ensure it is fit for service, fitted correctly, and adjusted
and worn correctly.
Working beyond the 30 degrees’ anchor point when using an inertia reel it will create
swinging effect which is hazardous to worker.
