According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a division of the U.S. Department
of Education1, children who are read to at home enjoy a substantial advantage over children who are
not Twenty-six percent of children who were read to three or four times in the last week by a family
member recognized all letters of the alphabet. This is compared to 14 percent of children who were
read to less frequently.
Nearly two-thirds of low-income families do not own any books for their children. Reading Is FUNdamental Pittsburgh
addresses this critical need by providing children with access to self-selected books, creating positive environments that
motivate children to develop a lifelong love of reading, and engaging families in literacy practices in the home. By providing
services to more than 20,000 of our city’s most economically disadvantaged children, RIF Pittsburgh is dedicated to reducing
the literacy gap in our community and fostering a lifelong love of reading in the children we serve.
