Jackie knew he had a short time in baseball to secure his family’s financial future; however, Branch
Rickey had barred Jackie from taking money from endorsements his first season. In late 1947, he
and his family began endorsing products such as Bond Bread, Borden’s Evaporated Milk, and Old Gold
Cigarettes. He would be one of the first black spokesmen to target mass market audiences.
