Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Parents
Attendance
Q: How will teacher’s keep track of students who are attending virtually?
A: Students learning virtually will need to log in via Google Classroom/Blackboard (7-12) and interact
with the classroom. The teacher will be taking attendance of all students online and virtual. A dedicated
teacher will be working with students K-6 and able to see who is available and take attendance.
Q: How will absences be handled? How will sick time be handled for students attending virtually?
What if my child goes over the number of absences allowed?
A: Excuses for absences will be submitted either via a Google Form, through Sapphire, or via email to the
front office secretaries.
Q: What if my family schedules a special absence during the school year?
A: Families are strongly urged to plan vacations around the school calendar. As reflected in School
Board Policy No. 204, students must attend school daily (virtually or in-person). Should a special
absence be necessary for travel or other urgent family matters, a Family Educational Tour or Trip form
must be completed in advance. This form is available in the school office, or on the district’s website
(Request for Special Absence), and should be completed at least one week prior to the absence. The
classroom teacher will determine how missed classroom work should be handled as a result of the
absence. The student assumes the entire responsibility for getting the missed work done and handed in
within two (2) weeks after his/her return. Assignments not received will be recorded as a failing grade.
Families are expected to follow quarantine guidelines provided at the time of the vacation posted to
the Allegheny County Health Department website.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Q: Are students going to attend reading support and small groups for special education?
A: Yes, students will still attend these during small group times in person and virtually.
Q: What modifications will be made to the sensory room?
A: Similar to the classroom, the sensory rooms will be devoid of paper, tissue paper, fabric, moveable
carpets, and other decorations to promote a sanitary environment. Each sensory station can have no more
than one student. There should be no more than 3 students in the sensory room at a time. Sanitization
will occur after each student uses the equipment. Students will also be encouraged to use hand sanitizer
before and after taking a sensory break. Grades K-3: Specific schedules will be created to minimize the
number of students using the sensory room at the same time. Grades 4-6: Specific student schedules will
be created to minimize the number of students using the sensory room at the same time. Grades 7-12:
Students should sanitize the spaces and equipment that they have touched. Early on, a staff member will
model how to clean these spaces so that students understand proper cleaning procedures.
Q: How will each child’s progress be monitored effectively (i.e., reading fluency)?
A: Teachers and staff working closely with students to progress monitor or assess students will be given
a plexiglass shield to sit behind. This will allow assessment and corrective feedback to be given in a safe
manner.
Q: At the K-6 level, will Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions and enrichments still be offered during
RAM time?
