Description: Research indicates that the first few years of life are the most influential in the overall development of a
human being. In this course, the student will study life before birth and learn what is necessary in creating a healthy
baby. Prenatal care and the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of the early years are stressed.
Current issues related to childcare such as parental readiness, influences of the media, technology, and effective discipline
are stressed. Any student interested in parenting, education, childcare, health care or related fields would benefit from
this course. Opportunity to apply learning through observations and interactions with children will be provided through
the operation of and participation in a preschool program run at the high school. A 9-week preschool experience for local
children is provided in which students plan and carry out activities for the children. Guiding, teaching, and helping
children develop through play experiences are the focus of this course.
