Description: Real numbers, equations, inequalities, proportional reasoning, absolute value, linear functions, basic
systems of equations/inequalities, exponential functions, polynomials, and quadratic functions are studied by showing
their relationship to real-life situations. These applications provide opportunities for the development of problem-
solving strategies. The connections between the representations of tables, graphs, equations, and word-problems are
emphasized. All students completing an Algebra 1 course are required to take the end of course Keystone Algebra 1
Exam as mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The Keystone Exam score is not calculated in the
student’s final course grade. Students enrolled in the lab section experience a lower student-to-teacher ratio and use the
extra time to extend classroom concepts, move at a flexible pace, clarify directions on homework, and reinforce strategies
        and procedures.

Standards in Algebra 1. Students will be given an initial assessment on Algebra 1 content. An individualized content
review will be created for each student based on their assessment results. In addition to content review, students will
work through a Keystone preparation program in order to increase their understandings of the key concepts and
demonstrate their understanding through the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam or local assessment. This course is only available
to students who have yet to achieve a score of proficient or advanced on the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam.
