25th was spent in labor in cutting down trees
in order to avoid frivolity on the day
sometimes called Christmas.”
Another quote says:
"A law was adopted in the General Court
of Massachusetts about 1650 which required
those who celebrated Christmas to be
punished. The status read, ‘Whosoever shall be
found observing any such day as Christmas
or any other shall be subject to a fine of five
shillings.’ The law's preamble explained its
purpose was for preventing disorder by
observing such festivals as were superstitiously
