television puts us in a hypnotic, zombie-like

condition. Without any doubt, that is true.

When I've been on visitation, sometimes

I would have to ask the people, "Can I turn

the television off?" I hadn't seen one of my

close relatives for over a year. We drove to

Tennessee; I called him, and I said, "I'm in

town." So we drove to their house. We went

into the living room. He and his wife were

sitting in front of the television. Now, I

hadn't seen him in a year. He looks at me,

and, you know, we shake hands and hug.

And he said, "Hey, how are you doing?" and

he turns back to the television. My wife and

I sat there for 30 minutes, and I kept trying

to talk, and they're watching the television.
