It's talking about apostasy — a very severe
warning.
Then in verses 7, 8, 9, 10, and throughout
the rest of the chapter, he brings hope and
comfort to the believers who persevere, and he
makes a comparison between the fruitful land
and the briars and so forth. Now, again, I'm
using this as an example, and I want you to see
that this passage is dealing with a total
defection, a permanent turning away from
Christ and His Word and His Truth. It's a
mockery, and he said in verse 6 that when
somebody does this, he says "seeing they
crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh,
and put him to an open shame” — no different
than those who crucified Him in AD 33. And
then the warning is given in chapter 3. If you
