Also, in 1 Corinthians 16:1 & 2, it appears
that the early church took up collections for
any and all the saints who had needs, not
just for those who were missionaries or
who had leadership positions in the church.
Yet when the average lay person in today’s
church has a need, he or she usually has to
take on extra secular work or borrow money
from family or a friend or a lending institution
with the intention of repayment — and
usually with interest — and many of those
lay people voluntarily give much time,
energy, and money (and often more than a
tithe) to the programs of the church — and
many times in addition to a 40-hour
workweek.
