Nunukan, N Kalimantan - The Agency for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant
Workers (BP2MI) has foiled an attempt to dispatch illegal workers to Sabah,
Malaysia, and took 32 workers into detention.
Head of BP2MI in Nunukan Senior Commissioner Hotma Viktor Sihombing stated
here on Wednesday that the agency had conducted a raid on a passenger ship that
recently arrived from South Sulawesi.
It also raided some houses in the region allegedly used as illegal accommodation for
the workers.
Sihombing noted that the agency had closely monitored some locations allegedly
used as a route for illegal workers to cross the border to Malaysia's territory, such as
Haji Putri Bridge in East Nunukan Village, and illegal accommodations in Sei
Sembilan and Pasir Putih.
As many as 32 illegal workers were detained during the raid, including three
children. The workers hold passports, but they did not possess legal documents to
work in Malaysia.
Malaysia has since long been home to nearly two million Indonesian migrants, the
largest number of Indonesians working abroad. However, several of them have no
proper work permits, as they may have entered the country illegally.
