SQUARE MATIING
This matting has a specifically
square shape that is obtained
by using four intersecting
diagonals. A simple variation
is to increase the number of
interlacing diagonals on the
four sides. thus increasing the
size of the mat whilst
retaining its square shape.
Alternatively, you can
increase them on one side
only to give it a rectangular
shape, but it is better to
master the technique of
making square matting before
attempting this. There is
nothing particularly difficult
about making this mat, and
the method is clearly
illustrated in the photographs;
but a few practical hints may
help make the outcome more
successful. You need
adequate space on which 10
layout the matting. as it
requires many yards of rope,
which are constantly being
moved around. Since this can
lead to great confusion and
make the mat just a mass of
tangles. be careful not to

move the turns that have
already been laid when
passing the end through.
