HEAVING LINE
       KNOT

       This knot is also known
       as the Franciscan or
       monk's knot and is both
       decorative and
       practical. The
       Franciscan friars use it
       as a weight along the
cord they use as a belt.
It is also used to weight
       heaving lines or as a
       stopper knot on small
       stuff. The heaving line
       knot is used by sailors
       because it is very strong
       and does not wear the
       fibers of the rope.
