       CLOVE HITCH

       For a rope under strain

       This method is preferred by
       sailors for mooring a drifting
       boat.
       Method
       Take the rope in both hands
       (1). Jerk the rope with the left
       hand to form a loop around
       the ballard (2). The resulting
       formation will be under
       tension (3). Take hold of the
       end and make another loop,
       dropping that over the ballard
       (4,5,6). Hold the end tight
       and the knot will tighten on
       its own.
