Maenam cookbook celebration with Angus An and friends.
Three of Vancouver’s most revered chefs will be in the kitchen and on the floor to support their friend Angus An, Chef-Owner of the award-winning Thai sensation Maenam, as he launches his first ever cookbook. This can’t-miss collaborative dinner will be an authentic Thai feast with innovative twists as only Robert Belcham, Hamid Salimian and Joël Watanabe can cook them up. Expect recipes from the book—such the stir-fried spot prawns, fragrant curries and irresistible snacks like crispy-fried oysters— made with local ingredients and served with exceptional wines and cocktails. And, of course, each guest will take home a signed copy of the Maenam cookbook.
ABOUT ANGUS AN
Chef-Owner Angus An trained with some of North America’s most highly regarded chefs before staging in Michelin-starred restaurants in London. Among them was Nahm, where the Taiwanese-born chef discovered the fragrant complexities of Thai food. In 2006, Chef An returned to Vancouver to open Gastropod and, in 2009, rebranded it a Thai restaurant. It was named Vancouver magazine’s Best New Restaurant, followed by
10 consecutive awards including Restaurant of the Year in 2016. Maenam has also been ranked among the country’s best restaurants by both Canada’s 100 Best and Maclean’s. In 2020, Chef An released his first cookbook, Maenam: A Fresh Approach to Thai Cooking (Appetite by Random House).
ABOUT ROBERT BELCHAM
An inventive and veteran industry leader, Chef Robert Belcham began his career working for the Vancouver Island restaurants Rebar and Aerie Resort before stints at The French Laundry, C Restaurant and Nu. In 2007, Belcham opened Fuel Restaurant, later rebranded as Refuel Restaurant and Bar, and shortly afterward opened the Italian-ish Campagnolo, followed by Campagnolo Roma and Monarch Burger. In 2018, he joined chefs Angus An, Hamid Salimian and Joël Watanabe in creating the “fast food done better” concept Popina Canteen on Granville Island. Chef Belcham is currently the president of the Chef’s Table Society of B.C., organizing the inaugural Cooks Camp.
ABOUT HAMID SALIMIAN
Hamid Salimian intertwines the exotic traditions of his Persian heritage with the fresh flavours of
the Pacific Northwest for a contemporary style uniquely his own. Born in Iran, he trained as a chef in Vancouver and has cooked at some of the city’s top restaurants. Today he is co-owner of Popina Canteen on Granville Island, a culinary college instructor, founder of Nextjen gluten-free products and a chef- consultant for national brands such as Earls Kitchen + Bar. He has also won eight international gold medals and coached team Canada at Bocuse d’Or. 18, he joined Justin Witcher in opening Como.
ABOUT JOËL WATANABE
Joël Watanabe is Executive Chef of Kissa Tanto and its older sister Bao Bei, as well as a co-owner of Popina Canteen on Granville Island. He was born in Ottawa and came west in the 2000s to open the raw bar at Whistler’s Araxi Restaurant. In 2010, he opened the modern Chinese brasserie Bao Bei to rave reviews, followed by the Japanese-Italian Kissa Tanto, which was recognized as Canada’s Best New Restaurant 2016 by enRoute magazine.
