.“Masal Masal İçinde”, bazı okullarda yardımcı ders ki- tabı olarak okutuluyor. Bu süreç nasıl oldu?
Bu kitabın önce, Güney Kore’deki öğretmenler tara- fından ders kitabı olarak okutulması öneriliyor. Sonra, çok öğretici bir masal olduğu için Türkiye’de hem bazı devlet okullarında hem özel okullarda yardımcı ders ki- tabı olarak okutuluyor. Benim kitaplarımda tarih var; dolayısıyla, öğretmenler çocuklara tarihi, edebiyatı sev- dirmenin bir aracı olarak, benim kitaplarımı kullanıyor. Şöyle oluyor: Öğretmen, “Bu kitabı okur musunuz?” diyor. Çocuk okuduğu kitabı severse, hem edebiyatı hem tarihi seviyor. Bize çok değerli yazarları okuturlardı; ama çocuk yaşta anlayamayacağımız eserleri okuyunca, okumaktan soğurduk. Bu nedenle, edebiyat ve tarih öğ- .retmenleri için Ahmet Ümit biçilmez kaftan; çünkü so- nuçtan memnun kalıyorlar. Çocuk hem tarih okuyor hem .macera okuyor hem de okuduğunu seviyor.
Ahmet Ümit iyi bir okuyucu mu?
Önceleri çok iyi bir kitap okuyucusuydum; ama bun- dan sonra, yazar olmaya çalışan bir okuyucu oldum. Yani, “Bu nasıl bir kitap, nasıl yazmışlar?” sorularını sor- maya başladım. Eğer, Dostoyevski okuyorsanız, zevk için okuyorsunuzdur; kafayı takmazsınız. Şimdi, nasıl ya- .zılmış, hikaye nasıl kurulmuş, karakterler nasıl yaratılmış gibi sorularım var ve bu soruların cevaplarını her yazarda arıyorum.

Kitap okumanın zevkini seviyorum. Diğer bir yandan, mesleki açıdan okuyorum. Tüm yazarları okuyorum di- yebilirim. Genç yazarların kitaplarının hepsini alıyorum. Yurt dışından, klasikleri okumaya devam ediyorum; o hiç değişmedi... Marquez, benim için çok değerli yazar- lardan... Dostoyevski, Tolstoy... Dönüp dönüp Kafka’nın eserlerini okurum. Paul Auster, okuduğum yazarlardan bir diğeri... Umberto Eco’nun ilk romanı, Gülün Adı, be- nim için çok değerli. Türk yazarlardan hem eski hem yeni,

Aslında, geçmişe oranla Türkiye’de okuma oranı çok arttı. Net söyleyeyim; geçen yıl benim yeni kitabım ol- mamasına rağmen, resmi satışım 450 bindi. Büyük ra- kam... Dünyada sıraya koysak, ilk 10’a girer. Sadece, ben değil, böyle okunan 10-15 tane yazarımız var. Bence okuma oranı artıyor; ama Almanya, Amerika ya da Av- rupa’nın değişik ülkeleri ile kıyasladığınız zaman, biraz gerideyiz. İnsanlar, bir yaşam gailesi içinde. Aileden ge- len okuma alışkanlığı olmadığı için daha çok televizyon izleyerek eğleniyoruz. Halbuki, okumak da eğlencelidir. Alışkanlık olmadığı için böyle. Açıkçası, durumun çok kötü olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Okunuyor; ama yeterli değil, daha fazla okumak lazım. Bu hem Türkiye’nin hem empati duygumuzun hem de demokrasimizin gelişme- si açısından çok önemli. Çocuklara, “Çizgi roman oku- ma, vampir hikayeleri okuma!” dememek lazım. Bence okusunlar. Sonra, daha başka eserlere yönelecekler. Bir yerden okuma zevkini alsın bu çocuklar... Aldıktan sonra, daha iyiye yönlendirebiliriz.

As we do not have the habit of reading from the family, we enjoy watching television more. Howev- er, reading is also fun. That’s because it’s not become a habit. Frankly, I do not think the situation is very bad. It is read; but not enough, we have to read more. This is very important for Turkey, for improving our capacity for empathy, and for the development of our democra- cy. We should not say to the children, “Do not read com- ic books, do not read vampire stories!” I think they may read. Then they will lead to other works. These children should take the pleasure of reading from somewhere... After they have it, we can lead them to better.

Is Ahmet Ümit a good reader?
In the beginning, I was a very good book reader; but then I became a reader trying to be an author. I mean, I started asking questions like “What kind of book is it, how did they write it?” If you are reading Dostoyevsky, you are reading for pleasure; you do not mind these. Now, I have questions regarding how it is written, how the story is set up, how characters are created, and I am looking for answers to these questions in each author.
I read professionally. I can say that I read all the authors. I buy the books of all young authors. I keep reading world classics; it has never changed... Marquez is one of the most valuable authors for me... Dostoevsky, Tolstoy... I read the works of Kafka again and again. Paul Auster is another author I read... Umberto Eco’s first novel, “The Name of The Rose”, is very valuable to me. In Turkish literature, I like both old and new authors... Selim İleri, Adalet Ağaoğlu, Hasan Ali Toptaş, Emrah Serbes, Murat Uyurkulak... I read all of them and my reading process continues...
