The lion features many times in the Bible. Here are just a few examples:
A symbol of strength
Proverbs 28:1
“The wicked flee
when no one
pursues, but the
righteous are bold
as a lion.”
Amos 3:8
“A lion has roared!
Who will not fear?
The Lord God has
spoken! Who can
but prophesy?”
In prophecy of judgement
Jeremiah 4:7
“The lion has come
up from his thicket,
and the destroyer of
nations is on his way.”
Daniel 7:4
“And four great
beasts came up from
the sea, each different
from the other. The
first was like a lion,
and had eagle’s
wings.”
A metaphor for God or Jesus
Genesis 49:9-10
“Judah is a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son,
you have gone up.
He bows down, he lies
down as a lion; And as a
lion, who shall rouse him?
The scepter shall not
depart from Judah, Nor a
lawgiver from between
his feet, Until Shiloh
comes; And to Him shall
be the obedience of the
people.”
Revelation 5:5
“Behold, the Lion of the
tribe of Judah, the Root
of David, has prevailed to
open the scroll…”
In prophecy of restoration
Isaiah 11:6-7
“The calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little child shall lead them.”
Isaiah 65:25
“The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
The lion shall eat straw like the ox...”
