and thombs, etc). We were taken frequently into beautiful mountain areas, including Alishan with cherry
blossoms, giant cypress trees and local tea farms, Yushan and snow mountain national park, and to
numerous historic sites on the island, including Lukang with Lungshan temple and others.
In 2014 I presented a lecture at MOES to highlight the unique "Dual Education System at High-School
and university level in Germany", and in 2015 a lecture on "Progress in Solid-State Lighting" which had
penetrated the consumer market worldwide in a rather short time. To the best of my knowledge, the Duale
Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) has now established an official student exchange program with
NSYSU.
During my 2014 visit I was lucky to experience the NSYSU students and professors during the famous
"Sunflower Student Movement" in March/April. The engagement of many students and civic groups to
question the planned "Cross-strait service trade agreement" between mainland China and Taiwan was
enlightening for me, coming from a more established and less-threatened European democracy. What
a positive difference compared to many students in Japan, who were not at all interested in any political
matter of their country during my previous teaching at Waseda University in Tokyo! Dr. Ploog
In 2016 we visited the International Orchid exhibition near Tainan and the new National Palace Museum
(southern branch) near Chiayi with Prof. L.W.Chang and his wife.
After finishing his Ph.D. thesis and his military service Dr. James Lu is working since 2016 in a German
company, producing low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope instruments for research on ultimate
nanostructures. We had visited him and his parents near New-Taipei and several exciting sightseeing
spots, including Yingge potteries, Maokong mountains, historic Jiufen with teahouse and surrounding
goldmines,
We are still in close contact with him and his wife in Berlin.
Both my wife and myself we had numerous memorable visits to NSYSU and Taiwan since 2006, and we
have made many close friends in Kaohsiung and around. We are grateful for this wonderful experience,
and we wish another 40 years of successful operation of the MOES department of NSYSU in Kaohsiung.
Hope that superior teaching courses will always attract numerous creative students.
Sincerely yours
