We had a great day on Saturday. Derek & I volunteered to assist Tony Collins for marshalling at a
corner. This was different to the roadside one that we did last year for the cycling as this one was just
for the walkers. There were different size walks and we were placed for the 42km walk. We were
stationed in Dalkeith, on a pathway that leads down to the river edge. Lucky enough to find a nice
shady tree, we set ourselves up in plenty of time. We packed our drinks and lunch and after a nice
little picnic our “field checkers” arrived with extra water and snacks. So, all we needed now were the
walkers so we could direct them. Finally, approx. 1pm they started to come in drips and drabs. Derek
had brought our speaker with music so I did some “dancersise” whilst pointing with our arrows. Some
of the walkers were dressed as fairies, hula girls and some were painted pink and purple. I saw only 2
guys walking with a group, but there was certainly a variety of women. All ages, all sizes, all shapes,
all walking for a cause, it felt awesome to be involved. Everyone appreciated us directing them and
they said “thank you”. After approx. 60 people came and went, it was our turn to leave. The results
were amazing:860 Walkers raised $1.1million dollars as at 4.30pm. Youngest 8 years old the oldest
lady named Tracey used her wheelie walker. Julie.
