                        Rob Ashmore’s 90th Birthday Celebration

I would like to thank the members of the Branch that attended, also those that sent in an apology, to
show their recognition and respect for our longest standing active member. A special thanks goes to
Paul Butler, who travelled down from Rochester on the day. I am sure that Rob was deeply touched by
         your respect shown to him.

I would like to share with our members some of Rob’s history with the Geelong Branch. I cannot go into
too much detail as I have only had the honour and pleasure of knowing Rob for just over 16 years.

The Ulysses Club was formed in Sydney, August 1983, (The same year that Rob bought his trusty red
         Yamaha).

Rob Joined the Ulysses Club in August 1988, I am not sure, but I don’t know if the Melbourne Branch
had formed by then, and most members from around Australia travelled and met up with old mates at
the annual AGM held once per year somewhere in Australia.

The Geelong Branch held its Inaugural meeting in Oct 1995, and Rob was one of 13 people at that
meeting which was organised by Leon Millard, and he has been a paid-up member ever since.

My understanding is that in the Rob’s first 20 odd years with the Branch, he wasn’t an “up front”
socialite of the members, but he was always prepared to help out wherever possible. In the time that I
have been a member, I could always rely on Rob to go that little bit extra when asked to do something
for the benefit of the members.

As many of you know Rob has a vast knowledge of woodworking and Central Victoria, my advise to

the newer members is to sit down with him and ask some questions.
I am proud to have been a committee member that nominated Rob for his Telemachus Award, and I
still stand by what we said in his nomination letter.

Rob’s riding days have finally come to an end, I would be wrapped if I could still be riding 2 wheels at
the age of 88. Hopefully Rob can still join us at all the Social functions in the future.
Coll & I will be forever grateful for his friendship,

         Gentle.
