Which Way? (also, a Torres Strait greeting: What’s
happening/how are you going?)
The big decision now, having left Cairns, is which path you’ll
take to get to the top. The coastal route takes you past Port
Douglas to the Daintree. At this point you can opt to follow the
CREB track (if it’s open).
If the CREB is not for you, it’s onwards and upwards to Cape
Tribulation and the Bloomfield Track. Both tracks will lead to the
Lions Den Hotel, a landmark since 1875 and definitely worth a
look.
Continuing on you can head east to check out Cooktown and
Elim Beach and, if they’re on your itinerary, head north through
the National Parks to Cape Melville and Bathurst Bay. (It’s
recommended not to do this trip without an accompanying
vehicle). Have at least 500 kms worth of fuel and a good variety
of recovery gear.
A popular alternative is to take the Battlecamp and Lakefield
Roads through Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park or, if you
prefer to stick to bitumen for a bit longer, continue your travels
to the Tip via the Mulligan Highway to Lakeland and the PDR.
If you’re driving directly from Cairns you may choose to follow
the Mulligan Highway through Mount Molloy, Mount Carbine
past Palmer River Roadhouse to Lakeland and the Peninsula
Development Road (PDR).
