Five Beaches
Pretty much one of the most northern beach drives you can do on
mainland Oz, it’s a bucket list ‘gotta do’, so go do it!
North to south or south to north, the Five Beaches is a fun run
either way.
Just before you get to Fly Point there’s a drop down to the first of
the beaches. Then it’s exactly as the name suggests – head south
over the five beaches and four headlands and then complete the
loop when you come out from Narau beach and head back to
Somerset Road.
The climb out onto the headlands is a combination of sand and
rock, but as 4WD tracks go they’re fairly easy if you know what
you’re doing (and for some, even if you don’t!)
It doesn’t matter much which direction you take, although most
tend to go north-south. Missing the turnoff from Somerset Road to
Narau Beach could have something to do with that. 7km from the
Somerset turn off on your right, is the road to Narau Beach, a
further 4km will bring you to the beach.
If you’ve the time, and are so inclined, there are more beaches to
explore south of the loop – you will need to return to Narau to
come back out.
Off the headlands are plenty of inshore reefs – habitats with a good
variety of fish. The beaches too, regularly result in a pleasing
catch.
