History of Mapoon
Through government arrogance, indifference, and the quest for
profits the story of Mapoon needs to be told.
Mapoon is situated on the traditional lands of the Tjungundji
people. In the late 1800s a church mission was established; in
the ensuing years, the government removed many
mixed-descent children from their families to the community of
Mapoon.
The 1950s saw the government put pressure on the mission to
make the community self-sufficient, subsequently withdrawing
financial aid.
