Chili (Chilli) Beach & Iron Range National Park
Follow the signs to Chili/Chilli Beach (it seems no one can agree
on the correct spelling) through Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range)
National Park to the first of the three camping areas -
Rainforest camping area, Cooks Hut camping area and Gordon
Creek camping area - all are great for bird watching and for
those wishing to take a hike through the rainforest.
Continuing on will lead you to the Chilli Beach turn off, a further
6km will bring you to a stretch of white beach fringed by
coconut-laden palms.
Chilli Beach, also a National Park, has 25 campsites – due to its
popularity booking is a must – toilets (no showers) and beach
access to launch a boat. For larger boats there is the boat ramp
at Portland Roads.
Be aware, the beach can be affected by strong trade winds from
February through to late November.
Portland Roads
Portland Roads is a tiny community perched on the beach.
Accommodation is available at Portland House and The Temple
and surprisingly there is a café, called appropriately, Out of the
Blue Cafe – serving arguably the best seafood on Cape York.
Following the road to the end you’ll find a boat ramp where you
can throw a line out and - if you’re lucky - catch dinner.
Out of the Blue Café
Portland Roads ‘Out of the Blue Cafe’ is a small boutique cafe
located on the waterfront at Portland Roads. Enjoy cool sea
breezes and magnificent views of the Coral Sea while dining on
the deck.
The cafe specialises in locally caught seafood and homemade
desserts, all served to you by super friendly staff. Bookings are
essential for evening meals, and it’s recommended you book
ahead for lunches as the cafe is small and often fully booked.
