Chapter 12
Exploring Cape York on a
Motorcycle
There’s nothing more exciting than loading up your motorcycle with
gear, grabbing a bunch of mates and getting lost in the great
expanse and beauty of Cape York. There is no greater experience
on two wheels than an adventure in one of the worlds’ wildest,
most remote and most colourful landscapes.
With all its beauty and charm there are, of course, numerous
hazards associated with such a journey. If there were not, it
wouldn’t be an adventure and you may as well be riding a scooter
down Lygon street with a man bun and a skinny latte (not that
there’s anything wrong with that).
Firstly, know your limitations. If you could ride like Toby Price, Toby
Price wouldn’t have a job. Ride to your ability and don’t get caught
waking up in a ditch after doing some acrobatics over your
handlebars because you had too many jugs at PK’s! (Words from
experience)
Secondly, don’t spend all your time and money leading up to your
adventure on fancy gear and crocodile repellent. Make sure your
bike is going to make it! Pack a spare pre- oiled air filter or 2,
throw a spark plug in your spares kit and if you can pack all of that
in a support vehicle, even better! There is never a shortage of
people you may know looking to take the trip in a 4WD who can
cart your gear. Even better, go with an organised tour. Most
operators allow you to bring your own bike at a reduced cost.
