Chapter 13
Cape York with Your Dog
A question asked many times and usually answered by an
opinion is ‘Should I Bring My Dog?’ So, let’s look at the facts:
● Many travellers take their dog/s everywhere they go –
Explore Cape York is one of them
● You will not be able to camp in a National Park, dogs are
prohibited
● Some cattle properties lay baits, however, if this is the
case it will be well signed
● Rangers are generally ok with your dog being in your
vehicle or dog crate while you visit Fruit Bat Falls, Eliot
and Twin Falls but this may not always be the case
● Cape York is considered to be Paralysis Tick free from
Cooktown north, however, it’s a good idea to check your
dog for ticks on a daily basis
● Vets are not permanently based at any of the towns or
communities on the Cape, for example, the NPA is
visited by a vet approximately every three months,
Weipa more often. The nearest permanent vet is
Mareeba
