Card or Cash?
Cards are accepted everywhere on Cape York, however, there
are times when the internet is unavailable for several days – it
does take Telstra a bit longer to fix these things on the Cape.
It pays to carry some extra cash – at least enough to cover a
tank of fuel and a couple of days’ food. Ideally, fuel up upon
arrival, that way you know you’ll have enough fuel to get you
out of town.
Can I Drive Across the Jardine River Crossing?
No, that crossing is closed. The crossing has been closed, and
for a good reason - downstream is the pump station providing
water for the NPA – fuel and oils are not a welcome additive in
the drinking water.
Another good reason - the riverbed is one of shifting sands
making the crossing unpredictable – attaching a snatch strap
under the water or walking through a river guaranteed to
contain crocs is not most people’s idea of a fun holiday.
Contrary to popular opinion the Jardine River Ferry is not a
money making rort but intended to make life easier for those
that live in the top of the Cape year-round, without it, residents
of the NPA would be land locked for months each year.
The guys operating the ferry are locals who really know their
way around northern Cape York, make sure you say hi, they
usually love a chat and will probably impart some top-notch
local information.
Crocodiles & Other Creepy Crawlies?
Will you see a croc? Maybe, but quite possibly not – but they’re
there – if you choose to swim in brackish water in a remote
place or in the ocean, they’ll probably find you. Will you see a
snake? Maybe, but quite possibly not – but they’re there.
Spiders, mozzies, midges and other bugs are a given.
