Wujal Wujal (Bloomfield) Falls
At the end of the Bloomfield track, or a 10-minute drive south of
China Camp Road, is the 400m walking track to the picturesque
Wujal Wujal Falls - the path is an easy 30-minute return walk.
Wujal Wujal Falls are at their spectacular best at the end of the end
of the wet season but definitely worth taking a look throughout the
rest of the year.
Home Rule Rainforest Lodge & Camping,
Just 12km from the Lions Den hotel, and half an hour south of
Cooktown is the Home Rule Rainforest Lodge & Camping. The dirt
road into Home Rule sees you meandering through rainforest for
3.5km before reaching the green expanse of the campground.
Set on more than 100 acres and bordering on croc free Wallaby
Creek, it’s worth spending at least a night or two. Stunning
rainforest surrounds the shady camping area, tropical birds and
native wildlife abound. The creek is just waiting for you to dip your
toes into or take a swim.
Two dams are on site, perfect for canoeing or kayaking.
Take the picturesque 2.6km walk – about 45 minutes each way -
from the camping area to the stunning Home Rule Falls. The
waterfall is three-tiered, plunging into a deep pool, just perfect for
a cool swim.
Accommodation: Unpowered sites, limited accommodation,
Facilities: Camp Kitchen, toilet/shower block, indoor dining
room/recreation area and laundry, fires are ok
Cedar Bay Walking Tracks
Cedar Bay is a special area of the Wet Tropics but inaccessible by
road. Reaching the white sands and calm waters is a strenuous
28km trek, taking up to nine hours, and should only be considered
if you have a good level of fitness.
Shorter walks from Homerule to Slaty Creek and Black Snake
Rocks lead you through the old workings of tin mines from a
bygone era.
