The Croc Tent
No visit to the Tip is complete without dropping into the Croc
Tent - either on the way up or on the return journey.
It’s about halfway between Bamaga and the Tip at the Punsand
Bay turn off. If you’re after a souvenir or a shirt to let the world
know where you’ve been, this is where it’s likely to be found!
And while there, wander over the road and check out the
remains of Lockerbie Station – founded by Frank Jardine in
1867.
If Punsand Bay and Roonga Point aren't part of your plans head
north and onwards towards Somerset, Five Beaches, Pajinka
and the Tip.
Roonga Point
If you’re doing self-sufficient camping on your trip to the Tip,
then Roonga Point is one of those ‘must stop’ free camping
areas.
Head to the Croc Tent and take a left towards Punsand Bay,
9km in you should be able to spot a clearly defined track
heading west (it’s not signed). Another 3km along a somewhat
sandy track will take you to the beach with plenty of campsites
to cater for camper trailers or off-road vans through to those
who just want a small, secluded site to roll out a swag. You’ll
find sites right beside the beach, or if you prefer, back in the
bush.
Overlooking a number of islands, including Roko and
Possession, you’re protected from the prevailing southeasterlies
and later in the evenings you’ll be treated to some of the Cape’s
most amazing sunsets. And when you’re sick of your own
cooking, you’re only half an hour away from enjoying one of
Punsand Bay’s famous pizzas. So, call in – whether camping for
a while or just ducking in for a look.
