Kalbarri Weekend – WA Day Mid-Year Rally 3 to 6 June
Twelve members of the Joondalup Branch joined in to enjoy the long weekend at the Mid-Year Kalbarri Rally.
Actually there was 13 going but Jim came down with the dreaded Covid on the Wednesday before the
weekend. Mark delayed going until Saturday while Pam and Stephen drove up late Friday. Work is a bitch
hey Pam!
Due to our late decision to go to the rally, the Red Bluff Tourist Park rally site had been booked out but we
managed to book 2 excellent family apartments at the Palm Resort that comfortable handled over 6 people
each. In retrospect, it turned out to be a good move as quite a few members from the Fremantle Branch
came down with a Covid Cluster during the week following.
The ride to Kalbarri split into two groups, Bruce, George and Brian by the Brand and Ken, Paul, Dave, Darryl,
Ross and Fran and Marg driving by the coast road stopping for fuel and a bite at Jurien Bay. The Brand
Highway team stopped at Eneabba, with the two groups meeting up at the Puma 440 roadhouse for a quick
lunch. Being a double demerit weekend, we all road to speed limits. One speed camera was spotted near
Geraldton. Total ride distance to Kalbarri from Beldon around 540.
Friday night was a meal at the pub where you had the choice of three types of pizza. Everywhere else in town
had been booked out. It was still a good night even with the limited menu. Pam and Stephan arrived around
8.00pm.
Saturday was a ride around taking in beach sights and relaxing, deciding to do the Skywalk on Sunday
Morning. Luckily Kalbarri has a taxi service, a 12 seater mini bus that was ideal for us all to get to the rally
dinner at the Red Bluff village. It had been expected 2 or 3 of us would need to ride. Chris and Dianne from
Warnbro did their normal job of getting everything organised along with their branch members with help
from the Geraldton Folk. Nice BBQ pack and salad meal, a couple of drinks catching up with the other
branches and then back to the accommodation for a relatively fairly early night.
The Sunday morning ride out to take in the new Skywalk left us all remarking on what a wonderful attraction
this was. Actually there are 2 Skywalks and the construction and facilities blend into the natural surrounds.
A few of us ventured down the track to Natures Window as well. Being a Sunday and long week end, lots of
tourists but that is good to see. Everyone was impressed with the “Loo with a View”.
A relaxing afternoon following a nice homemade lunch and dinner at the Rally Site once again.
An early rise on Monday to pack and head off around 8.00am. Unfortunately a big roo decided to jump into
the side of Stephen and Pam’s car. Luckily not a lot of damage but will still be costly. A chilly morning ride
but nice in the afternoon. As to be expected a fair amount of traffic as we all took the Brand Highway home.
An enjoyable weekend away as usual.
A big thanks to Chef Brian with help from others for our breakfasts and Sunday lunch.
