Sunday Ride to Kitchener
28 Aug 2022
This Sunday was a good day in the rain lottery which has been our recent weather. There was little
chance of rain in the forecast and looking up wasn’t too scary in the morning. We had a good roll
up as a result of people expecting not to get wet.
In the end we had 12 people on 10 bikes and a trike. Cookie had volunteered to be tail end Charlie
for the day.
The destination today was Kitchener, but to get there we headed north toward Brandy Hill. John and
Lisa had told us about roadworks resulting in a closed road in Woodberry, so we headed up the
highway toward Raymond Terrace and turned west from there. After travelling through Brandy Hill
we turned south again and wound our way to Maitland Vale Road.
We followed Maitland Vale Road through to Luskintyre road, avoiding as many potholes as we
could along the way. On the way through Luskintyre, we were greeted by a small fluffy dog, who
was in the middle of the road and wanted to stay there. I was forced to stop and I heard later that
things got fairly ugly behind me. It was fortunate that I didn’t look in the mirrors, so I was blissfully
unaware of what was going on at the back.
In the end the dog got out of our way and we went on to Lochinvar and then to Greta for morning
tea. Morning tea had its own minor drama. The Espresso machine at the bakery was out of order, so
we had to go to the café up the road a bit. Other than that, the break went fairly smoothly in the
rotunda at Greta.
After morning tea, we got back on
or bikes and went through Pokolbin
and into Cessnock where we turned
right and headed out toward
Millfield. From Millfield we turned
back toward Ellalong and through to
Kitchener.
Parking at the Khartoum Hotel in
Kitchener was at a premium, but we
all found somewhere to park and
found Len and Jenny Mawkes as
well as Deb and Peter Hill who had
arranged to meet us there. Peter
Hill was showing off the results of
his latest operation. The table
booking got a bit lost in translation,
so we ended up on a few different
tables. Otherwise we had a good lunch and went our separate ways afterwards.
Thanks to those who were there on the day and thanks to Cookie for the tail end duties.
