Historically, during the epoch of Shimon Ben Shetach, King
Yannai, his brother‑in‑law, murdered all of the Sages of Israel.
Those murders were provoked by gossip, as the Gemara Kedusheen ןיִשׂע

teaches (66a). (Please see that reference). Also, the murder of the
Tanna Rebbe Eliezer HaModa’i, which was one of the causes for
the destruction of Beitar, was caused by gossip. He was informed

trait, the Torah specifically cautions us about this sin in the context

of a Lav (Vayikrah 19:16) “Do not peddle gossip in Jewish society,” .דָחֶאל דָחֶא
as will be explained shortly. (This quality is very much unlike anger
or cruelty or cynicism or other types of destructive character traits,

against this. If one carefully analyzes these sins of Lashon Hara

and positive commandments that address all of the interpersonal וֹתוּנגִבּ הרָבּדּ אלֹ איִהו ,םיּה ןִמ וֹליִצּהל הּמצע הנכִּסו
relationships of mankind and many of the details of the personal

help. That is why the Torah explicitly cautions us about violating שׁוֹדקּה היִחא ןיבל הּניבּ קרַ ,םיִבּרַ ינְפִבּ אלֹו שׁוֹביֶּשׁ

these laws, so that we would not become trapped in this terrible
