SAMPLE CHAPTER
Steven Has a Change of Heart
Silence filled the house as raindrops continued to
beat upon the ground. Something was different, the
atmosphere in the Clark’s residence wasn’t the same,
and it would soon be evident.
Peter gently approached Steven and said, “Sweet-
heart, can we sit down and talk for a minute?”
Steven responded, “Can this wait? I’m swamped
at the moment.”
Peter persisted, “I’ve been waiting to speak with
you since my last request.”
Steven took a deep breath and responded, “Okay,
I’m listening.”
Peter continued to speak, “Over the last three
months, things just haven’t been the same. We hav-
en’t enjoyed a nice romantic meal together in weeks.
You’re barely home, and when you are here, you’re
here for a very short time, and then you leave. You’ve
slept on the couch more than usual, and it’s been
weeks since we’ve been intimate. I’m starting to be-
come a little concerned. Even Frank told me that he’d
noticed a difference in both of your friendship, express-
ing his concerns that both of you haven’t worked out
together in weeks. As your spouse, it is my right to ask
if there is a problem. Have I unknowingly done or said
anything that might have rubbed you the wrong way?”
Steven didn’t respond, so Peter continued, “Is it
me? Are you seeing someone else? Haven’t I been
good to you?”
“Yes, you’ve been wonderful to me,” Steven re-
plied. “And no, I’m not cheating. It’s just...” After a long
