REMEMBERING SOORI: A CALL TO CHERISH EVERY MOMENT
"Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist
that appears for a little time and then vanishes." James 4:14 (ESV)
Have you ever experienced a moment that brings your entire life into sharp focus? As I write this, my dear friend has just
woken up from lung surgery, and I’m filled with a mix of hope and worry. It is still unclear what the overall outcome will be,
and the uncertainty weighs heavily on my heart. In these vulnerable moments, I’m reminded of how fragile life truly is and
how vital it is to cherish the people we love.
Recently, our community faced an immense loss with the sudden passing of Soori from Welcome International and Ace Pizza.
My heart aches at the thought of him no longer being with us. He was such a vibrant part of our town—someone who brought
warmth and laughter to everyone he met. When I moved here three years ago, Soori was one of the first people to make me
feel welcome. His cheerful spirit was contagious, and he had this incredible ability to make everyone feel valued. I think back
to our conversations, how he encouraged me during my campaign for council, and how he offered my son guidance in his
business endeavours. Soori had such a unique perspective on life, shaped by his own experiences, and I always felt like I was
gaining wisdom whenever we talked.
His unexpected departure has left me shaken. It’s made me reflect on the conversations we had—those moments filled with
laughter and insight—and the many questions I still have about his life. I regret not visiting him more often, not taking the
time to soak in his stories and his perspective on life. I wanted to learn more about how he ended up in Madoc, why he chose
to stay, and what lessons he had picked up along the way. The realization that those opportunities are now gone feels heavy,
reminding me of the importance of making every moment count.
In this solemn time, I feel so grateful for the community and how we come together, whether in joy or sadness. Remembering
Soori’s vibrant spirit, I’m reminded that life is too short to let moments pass us by. With Thanksgiving and the holiday season
approaching, I can’t help but feel excited about all the gatherings that allow us to connect, share joy, and support each other
through life’s ups and downs.
October is shaping up to be an incredible month filled with opportunities for connection and growth within our community.
The variety of events I have lined up is just a glimpse into how vibrant our community can be, highlighting the richness of
shared experiences.
For instance, I look forward to the upcoming Women’s Breakfast and resuming Ladies Bible Study at Madoc Baptist Church.
These gatherings are open to all women in our community and not only provide a chance for spiritual growth but also foster
deep connections among women, reminding us of the strength that comes from sharing our stories and supporting one
another.
Celebrating my friends’ birthdays is another wonderful way to connect. It’s a joyful occasion that allows me to reflect on the
milestones we share, emphasizing the importance of nurturing our relationships and celebrating each other’s journeys.
I’m also planning a little getaway with a friend, which I’m really looking forward to. This break will be a great chance to
unwind and enjoy some quality time together, reminding me of the importance of taking a step back from the busy pace of
life to recharge and strengthen our friendship.
The Chamber of Commerce Awards serve as a powerful testament to the dedication of local businesses and I’m proud to be
on the organizing committee again this year. Recognizing the hard work of our membership boosts morale and strengthens
community ties, encouraging us to support one another in our professional endeavors.
As I help plan Madoc's Enchanted Christmas Festival, I’m reminded of how such events can bring warmth and joy during the
holiday season. They provide an opportunity for us to gather, share in festive cheer, and create lasting memories together.
The Annual General Meeting at Emmanuel Christian Academy is an important event that supports Christian education in our
community. As a member of the Board, my involvement reinforces my commitment to this cause and helps strengthen our
community through teamwork.
Looking ahead to our Annual Planning Retreat at work, I’m excited about the chance to reflect and set collective goals.
Spending time with our team enhances our professional relationships and encourages us to align our visions while
supporting each other’s growth.
Finally, the Harvest Hootenanny Fundraiser organized by Anchor of Hope beautifully illustrates how we can unite for a cause
greater than ourselves by raising funds for vital resources in our community. As we enjoy good food and the company of
friends, we also have the opportunity to try new things (like square dancing!). This event truly reminds us of the meaningful
impact we can achieve together.
