Centre Hastings Council and The Royal Canadian Army Cadets Branch #385 honoured the anniversary of Vimy Ridge
The battle of Vimy Ridge was commemorated by the Royal Canadian Army Cadets from Branch #385 on April 8th. This
solemn ceremony was held at the municipal office of the Municipality of Centre Hastings at 7pm. The commemoration on
Monday evening saw the presence of Council members and Legion members, who raised the Cadet flag in honour of Vimy
Ridge. The Royal Canadian Army Cadets branch #385 paraded from the Madoc Armoury, which is now known as the
Kiwanis building today. This location was once home to numerous service members who trained and a place for veterans
who served in World War I from Madoc.
Mayor Deline said in a small commemorative speech “On the 9th of April, 1917, Canadian soldiers began what would come
to be known as the Battle of Vimy Ridge; And whereas, from that day until the end of the battle on April 12th, more than
100,000 Canadians took part in this battle on all divisions. Canadian soldiers engaged in combat on land, underground, and
in the air. Tragically, 3,500 Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice, while 7,000 Canadians were wounded as a result of this
     battle."
Mayor Deline also mentioned “The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a costly victory but also a strong symbol of Canadian unity.
The Canadian victory at Vimy was a defining moment for Canada, when the country emerged from under the shadow of
Britain and felt capable of greatness. Canadian troops also earned a reputation as formidable, effective troops because of
     the stunning success.”
Young members of The Royal Canadian Army Cadets Madoc Branch #385 had the opportunity to learn the military
heritage by recognizing Canadians involvement in Vimy Ridge. The date of April 9th, 2024 will forever be remembered as
the 14th anniversary of the Army Cadets' commemoration of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, in collaboration with the
Municipality of Centre Hastings. Members of Centre Hastings Council expressed their gratitude to Captain Sharlen
Matacheskie and the young members of the Royal
Canadian Army Cadets from Madoc Branch #358 for
their presence at this small evening ceremony.
