CELEBRATING 200 YEARS
Marmora celebrates its 200th Anniversary in the month of August! Here are some fun facts below about
                      this incredible town:
Marmora is older than Canada (which was created July 1, 1867).
Since 1820, the Township has played a leading role in the development of iron
mining. In addition, copper, lead, silver, gold and lithographic limestone have been
       extracted.
Iron mining was an important industry in the area during the 19th century. The
village was originally named Marmora Iron Works.
Marmoraton Mine pit size: 2800 feet long, 1500 feet wide covering 75 acres with a
       depth of 700 feet.
Marmora was opened for sale in 1821. The newly surveyed township was added to
Hastings County on the initiative of Charles Hayes, an Irish entrepreneur, in return
for his setting up the Marmora Iron Works.
The hamlet of Marmora was separated from the Township and incorporated as a
village in 1901. It was re-amalgamated with the surrounding townships of Marmora
and Lake in 2001 to form a newly expanded Municipality of Marmora and Lake. MARMORA FAIR GROUNDS
