6 ACTIVITIES TO HELP BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS THIS YEAR — JUST FOR FUN
CBC LIFESYTLE
Here are six courses and activities to help you broaden your horizons and have a little fun in 2023.
Be a scientist — and work with NASA
Time to stargaze for science! Join one of NASA's Citizen Science Projects and earn the title "citizen scientist". Do things as
simple as staring into the sky — think cloud reporting and identifying celestial objects — and you can help make scientific
discoveries, and even earn a co-author credit on a scientific publication. There are currently 32 projects open to
collaborators worldwide and you only need a cell phone or laptop to participate in most.
Write your first short film
Want to dip your toes in the movie-making universe? Why not start with a short film? OCAD University School of
Continuing Studies offers an online intro to screenwriting for short films. You don't have to have any previous
screenwriting experience — the course teaches the fundamentals of cinematic storytelling. There are lectures, screenings
and group discussions. And the best part? By the end of the course, you'll have developed your own 5-10 minute screenplay.
Make abstract art like a pro
If you're someone who's thought, "I could do that" — well, maybe you can. This online abstract painting course, also from
OCAD University School of Continuing Studies, is designed for beginners or intermediate-level artists who want to "explore
the expressive and experiential nature of abstract painting". You'll need some supplies for the practical part, like learning
various techniques, and there'll be discussions on art history and contemporary abstract painting to sink your teeth into,
too.
Know your dinosaurs
Curious about the awe-inspiring world of dinosaurs? A free course called "Dino 101" is available through the University of
Alberta that will teach you about their origins, how they lived, ate, survived — and their eventual extinction. Lessons are
delivered from museums, labs and dig sites and they can be taken at your own pace. No previous background in
palaeontology is required.
Try 3D printing
We've all heard of 3D printing — but did you know that an opportunity to try it might be just around the corner, literally?
Many public libraries require nothing more than membership to use their 3D printing machines. The Toronto Public Library
offers a free course that teaches you the ins and outs of 3D printing, including how to prepare a design and how to use the
equipment properly. Check your nearest branch for the courses and services they might offer.
Talk like an art snob
If you like spending time in museums and galleries but shy away from talking about art, let this be the year that changes.
Christie's Education offers courses in several different streams of art study — history, business, marketing, curating, and
more. The online courses accessible worldwide and include advanced courses for those who might want to delve deeper or
even consider a career in the fine arts.
