THE OLD HASTINGS MERCANTILE & GALLERY
This summer marks 20 years since Lillian & Gary bought The Ormsby Presbyterian Church, and re-opened it with a
100th Anniversary Service. Re-named The Old Ormsby Heritage Church, they were so very honoured to have the
past Moderator of The Presbyterian Church in Canada, Rev. Dr. Arthur W. Currie, participate in the service, and also
provide some historical context that was printed in the service bulletin. Rev. Currie and his family had been
cottaging on Wollaston Lake since 1954 when they bought land on the lake, with no road and no power. Though
living in BC, Art and his wife Anne, continued to visit every summer until selling the cottage to Sheila Currie and
husband Fred McConnell in 2009. Providing the message for the service was Kevin Martin, who also has deep ties to
the community. His great grandparents, John & Margaret Martin, donated the land that the little red brick church
was built on in 1904. There was an amazing turnout, including many past members of the community who made the
effort to travel back to Ormsby. A lovely day all around.
