Santa and a “Despicable Me” minion handed out gifts and posed for pictures with children at the 18th District’s 30th annual holiday drive-thru event in Jefferson Park on Dec. 19. As per COVID-19 restriction guidelines, people at the event were socially distancing and wearing masks — even Santa.
One of the most enduring holiday traditions for police officers looked a little different this year, but the mission remained the same.
Shop with a Cop exists just about everywhere, but the COVID-19 pan- demic meant that the officers hit the aisles alone before delivering gifts to the homes of deserving children and their families.
Community Safety Officers did just that in partnership with the Isra- el Idonije Foundation, thanks to donations from Jewel-Osco, Target and JOANN Fabrics. Dozens of officers filled carts and bags at Target with toys and other presents before bringing everything directly to the kids.
